Esthetic Dentistry

Recover your smile

What is esthetic dentistry and what treatments does it include?

There are now more and more esthetic dental treatments available, allowing us to offer a range of personalised solutions to our patients. Advances in the materials and procedures used in esthetic dentistry have hugely increased the possibilities of esthetic dental treatments. In our modern, competitive society an attractive appearance can often be the difference between success and failure, both in our personal and professional lives. The mouth is one of the focal points on the face and it is no surprise that the smile plays an important role in how we see ourselves and how others see us.

As with other fields, esthetic dentistry is based on science and technology but also uses an intuitive approach, essential in the quest for an attractive, pleasant and natural smile.

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin layers of porcelain used in a minimally invasive treatment option that can improve the shape, look and colour of the teeth. If you want a more even smile, a brighter smile or simply a different smile, porcelain veneers could be the best solution. When you choose porcelain veneers to improve your smile, you can choose any colour and the colour change is permanent. Modern porcelain veneers last longer and look better than composite veneers. Micro veneers and dental veneers with no drilling

These are ultra-thin and extremely hard-wearing layers of ceramic material that are as thin (0.2, 0.3, 0.4 mm) as a contact lens. What makes them different from traditional dental veneers is that they are attached without having to modify the tooth or extract any teeth. This makes micro veneers a reversible and painless treatment, where the tooth remains intact and healthy.

Composite veneers

Composite veneers are made of a material that is applied directly to the tooth after the surface of the tooth has been treated with a special adhesive. The latest generation composites that we use in our clinic in Barcelona are as hard wearing as natural enamel and come in a range of colours that can be adjusted to match any teeth and provide long-term colour stability.

Composite veneers are a treatment option that can be used to replace a chipped tooth, improve the size of teeth, close spaces between teeth or change the shape of teeth or even to completely redesign your smile. Whatever treatment you choose, we will help you to find the most conservative treatment option for your functional and esthetic needs.

Teeth whitening

This can be used when the patient is not happy with the colour of their smile. Teeth whitening is a conservative treatment option. Current thinking is that for stained teeth the most effective approach is to carry out a detailed study to decide whether to use home-based treatment, treatment in the clinic or a combination. Tooth whitening can also be combined with other treatments such as dental veneers. Teeth whitening treatments for healthy teeth are safe and effective when carried out under a dentist’s supervision

Esthetic recontouring

Recontouring the natural teeth to create a straighter look in cases that need slight modifications is a quick, painless and long-lasting procedure with benefits for the patient who wants to create small esthetic changes. Esthetic recontouring is a simple process of remodelling the crown of the tooth to change its shape and rectify small problems of position, length, shape or proximity to neighbouring teeth and creates an improvement in the patient’s smile.

Other common esthetic treatments include:

  • 100% porcelain crowns.
  • Porcelain or composite inlays.
  • Removal of stains on the tooth enamel.
  • Micro abrasion of the tooth enamel.
  • Correction of misshapen teeth.

Can esthetic dental treatment on my teeth give me a perfect smile?

At Barcelona Dental Studio our esthetic dentistry specialists use a very modern tool, called Digital Smile Design, to plan treatments.  This computer program creates a detailed analysis of the facial features and the teeth, as well as the client’s expectations. The dentist can use it to create an extremely exact and personalised design for the esthetic dentistry treatment for each patient. This ensures the patient gets the smile they have always dreamed of and they can visualise it in a simulation before treatment begins.

What is the relationship between esthetic dentistry and dental health?

Many people believe that dentistry, rather than creating good health, damages it. However, when treatment is used correctly, dental health rather than being reduced is improved.

Cosmetic dentistry does not only improve the smile, it also helps to keep the mouth healthy. Some everyday examples are:

-Badly aligned teeth increase the risk of the build-up of bacterial plaque and dental tartar, which can ultimately lead to gum disease. Correctly aligning the teeth will improve this.

– Changes to dental tissue caused by decay may not cause pain but should be treated to prevent the loss of teeth.

-Losing a tooth changes the balance of the teeth in the mouth and creates pressure on other teeth and may damage them. It is essential to replace lost teeth to keep the mouth healthy.

At Barcelona Dental Studio, we start all our treatments by producing a digitally designed smile which is then turned into a diagnostic wax-up and a treatment plan which brings together biology, structure and function to ensure a long-lasting smile. We use photos and videos and a diagnostic wax-up that is then used to create a mock-up in the patient. For every case we can simulate the result, by using before and after photos and videos before we start the treatment. We use visual communication with our patients, showing them what they can achieve and how it will look in a way that they will understand.
